The Sustainable Energy Association (SEA) has today published a report which sets out how we can achieve the Government’s mission of halving energy use of new homes. Implementation of the policies proposed in the report would reduce both energy bills and carbon emissions.
Commenting on the report, Lesley Rudd, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Association said:
“We need to improve the standard of the homes we are building. The quality and performance of new homes needs to live up to the promises. The Government subsidies that support home buyers should be conditional on the homes achieving high standards of energy efficiency. Homes need to be affordable to live in as well as to rent or buy.
This year’s review of the Building Regulations provides an opportunity for Government to take action to improve our buildings. Introducing policies to halve the energy use of new homes makes sense for consumers, the economy and the environment.”
The SEA report calls for improvements to building regulations and energy performance certificates and new policies to stimulate consumer demand for energy efficient homes. It supports the establishment of the New Home Ombudsman, to protect home buyers, hold developers to account and give confidence that new homes are built to the quality and standard that is being paid for.
